WA Deaf Society EOI, Auslan Teacher (Auslan For Families Program)

 

The WA Deaf Society is committed to providing excellent services to the Deaf and hard of hearing communities of
Western Australia. In response to the roll-out of the NDIS, we are recruiting motivated and appropriately qualified people to work throughout the greater Perth metropolitan region and expanded NDIS trial sites.

Auslan For Families is a unique home-based program designed to support families with a Deaf and hard of hearing family member/s. WA Deaf Society staff work with the whole family at different times. The goal is to develop strategies that enhance the family’s capacity to be the natural facilitator of Auslan. The Deaf Auslan Teacher is both instructor and role model for the family on Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and Deaf culture.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with parents and speech pathologist/planners to develop a family service plan
  • Develop weekly Teaching curriculum for the required blocks of service, as identified in child’s plan
  • Provide regular teaching sessions in the family home, or other key environments, as requested
    (Teaching sessions may be delivered after school/evenings, on weekends or via Webcam)
  • Provide a flexible program that is responsive to the changing needs of the child and family
  • Maintain a session journal
  • Contribute to review and end of service reporting
  • Provide support and encourage NDIS participants to achieve their identified goals within their NDIS plan
  • Assist in the development of skills for independence and community participation

Applicant will need to address the following criteria:
Job Competencies

  • DOAT/COAT of Auslan teaching
  • Current WA Driver’s License
  • National Police Clearance
  • Working With Children’s Card
  • Native or near native Deaf Auslan signer

Desirable Criteria

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • Past experience teaching in Auslan
  • Past Professional Development in teaching Auslan
  • Deaf Interpreter Qualification
  • Past experience working with children
  • A love of sharing your knowledge and understanding of Deaf language and culture
